DIY Holiday Centerpiece

Christmas is a great time for DIY projects. You can make items such as ornaments, decorations, and neat centerpieces rather easily. This guide will show you how to create an easy to make Christmas centerpiece that also smells terrific. The centerpiece is made incorporating cinnamon, and it can be paired with a similar place setting to carry the theme across the look of the table. You can complete this project in about 20 minutes, it is that easy!

Gather Your Supplies

For this project you will need a hot glue gun, glue sticks, whole cinnamon sticks in varying widths, a red candle, sharp scissors or a knife. and some red ribbon.  You could also do this project with any other colored candle and ribbon to fit a different holiday, or use green for an alternate Christmas color.

Measure and Cut the Cinnamon Sticks

Line a cinnamon stick up so that it will sit starting at the base of the candle and end below the top. Cut the stick to size and then cut the remaining sticks to the same size. You can do this with a sharp knife and cutting board or  with a quality pair of kitchen scissors. Kitchen scissors are great for many other uses, so if you do not have any, I strongly suggest investing in a pair.

Place a glue stick in the glue gun and heat it up. Run a thin line of glue along a cinnamon stick. A little hot glue goes a long way, and you do not want it spilling over the edges, so don’t overdo it. Press the stick onto the candle and hold it for about 10 seconds until it remains firmly attached. Repeat with the remaining sticks all the way around the candle. When you have just a few sticks left to go, sort through your sticks to be sure to pick widths that will completely cover the remainder of the candle.

Wrap it with a Bow

Tie your ribbon in a bow around the candle. A single red ribbon will suffice, but you can also layer ribbons of differing colors and sizes. For example, layering gold and red or green and red can add an extra element of flash to the design. A few dabs of hot glue can also be used to keep it firmly in place.  Then you are finished! Wasn’t that easy? You can burn this candle, but it works best as an unlit decorative item or if lit for only a short period of time.  Once wax gets on the cinnamon it is unattractive. You can also make multiple candles and place them together with a garland wrapped around the base for a larger centerpiece.

Create a Cinnamon Table Theme

You can easily create a matching table theme by using red bows and  cinnamon sticks with your place settings. Tie a few sticks up with a bow to lay across the top of each plate and add additional candles to the table. Pine cones add another nice touch that work well with the color scheme and natural vibe of the table.
